String Spacing

I advice to space strings a little narrower at nut (string spread 1-6 = 40 to 42 mm) and a little wider at bridge (string spread 65 mm). This leads to a fingerboard shape which is slightly more like a wedge than usual. The neck broadth at neck would be 51 mm, at the body joint 65 mm . There is still enough room to the fingerboard edges left (around 5 mm). So it's also possible to space the strings wider at nut (44 mm) if requested.

Advantages:

  • More ease when stopping in lower positions (because of smaller distances).
  • More accuracy in higher positions espacially when playing stopped and open strings together: the greater distance Strings/fingerboard at higher frets increases the risc of touching unstopped strings unintentionally. The wider spacing at higher fret counteracts this problem.
  • More certainty in plucking. The difference to usual string spread at the bridge is not so much as to irritate. But big enough to give that bit of extra space to minimize riscs of noises when touching undesired strings.

Optically there's not much difference to the usual layout.Would you notice anything unusual on the photo to the right?

If you want to stick with the more familiar measurements, no problem. I'm also building guitars with the more usual specifications: broadth at nut 52mm and at 12th ftret (body joint) 62 mm. Then string spread at nut would be 44 mm and at bridge 58 mm.

You're used to other measures and want to keep them, or you want to try something completely different? Just tell me.
